Shocked and disappointed Reverend Frans Mokgobu struggled to find the right words as he spoke about his 19-year-old daughter who was arrestedearlier this week for allegedly faking a heart specialist's qualification.

Mokgobu's daughter Lebo was arrested by the Hawks at the Limpopo department of health offices where she was waiting to be interviewed for ajob as a cardiologist at Pietersburg Hospital. But her father, the head of the New Bethlehem Apostolic Church branch inKagiso on the West Rand, said his daughter was a Grade 10 pupil."As far as we are concerned, my daughter has been in Mokopane, where we originally come from. She was staying with her uncle since last year but because we were in contact with her, we never suspected anything. She was supposed to go to school to complete her matric and then go studynursing."She has always wanted to be a nurse," Mokgobu said.He said the family was deeply hurt."I cannot even sleep at night. She is still young to be accused of faking qualifications. My wife and I send her R500 all the time."She would just call to say she neededmoney and we would send it to her."My daughter loves going to church. She has a beautiful voice."I honestly believe that she was influenced to be involved in such a crime. Where would she get a doctor's certificate at such a young age?" asked Mokgobu.Lebo attended WD Oliphant Primary and Mosupatsela Secondary schools in Kagiso.Mokgobu said his daughter was sent to Mokopane last year after she disappeared from home."She returned after two weeks and we decided to send her back home to go complete her schooling there," said the father of two.Meanwhile, Lebo appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, and her fraud case was postponed to next week. Hawks spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel RobertNetshiunda said after receiving her application with supporting documents, department of health officials verified them but found that the American cardiology certificate was not legitimate."Police were notified and investigated [the matter]. The woman was called foran interview to verify if the documents belonged to her. The police then arrested her."Further investigations unearthed that the suspect did not have a Grade 12 certificate and that prior to her shortlisting for the post at the Pietersburg Hospital, she had already been introduced to the staff at the Netcare (Pholoso) Hospital, also in Polokwane, where she was supposed to start her job as a cardiologist," Netshiunda said. However, Netcare Pholoso Hospital general manager Sydney Masalla denied the claim that they had already given Lebo a job."I have never had contact with her or received any application from her for admitting privileges at our hospital, and have certainly not introduced her to staff at the hospital," he said.'She offered me a job in PR or HR'A Kagiso, West Rand, woman has told of how Lebo Mokgobu, the 19-year-old who pretended to be a cardiologist, lured her to Polokwane in Limpopo with the promise of a job at a private hospital. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she was with Mokgobu since last Wednesday and had high hopes that her job-hunting misery would end."I met her in 2014. I used to go to her father, who is a reverend, for prayers. She told me she was 32 and had a qualification in cardiology," the womansaid."What I know is that she moved to Polokwane to open her own surgery and was also working at Netcare Pholoso Hospital as a cardiologist."The woman said Mokgobu had told her to bring R2000 and she would helpher get a job as a public relations officer or in the human resources department at a private hospital, and that she would also work at Mokgobu's practice."But I did not have the money. Since I arrived in Polokwane, Lebo had been asking me for money for food and sanitary towels. I come from a disadvantaged background and no one works at home. I would ask my boyfriend and uncle for money and they would send it so we could buy food," she said. The woman said on the day police swooped, Mokgobu had been happy that she had been called for an interview at the Limpopo department of health offices in Polokwane."I was shocked when police came to her house to search it. They also asked me a few questions about her," said the woman, who returned to Kagiso on Wednesday night.A psychologist said there was an indication that Mokgobu had a psychological disorder. "Obviously, there is some kind of psychological disorder. The fact that she allegedly faked documents, lied and thought she could get away with it shows that there is a psychological problem. She needs to be assessed for a determination to be made," said Boitumelo Tshenkeng.Bogus practitioners pose risk to patients' healthFake practitioners pose a huge risk to patients' health, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) said yesterday. It said bogus practitioners could makewrong diagnosis and prescribe incorrect prescriptions."In other instances, there might be loss of lives as a result of these fake practitioners," said the council's Daphney Chuma. She said the matter had not been reported and the council had no jurisdiction over people not registered with it."The council, through its inspectorate office, has a responsibility to ensure that people who contravene the law are investigated and reported to law enforcement agencies."Of importance, the inspectorate officeensures that all unregistered healthcare professionals are not to practise and those persons masquerading as healthcare professionals are investigated, exposed and criminally charged," Chuma said. She said bogus practitioners tarnishedthe image of the healthcare profession."The council continuously advises would-be employers to only employ persons who provide sufficient proof that they are registered with the HPCSA to practise a health profession registable under the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974."Are there enough and tough laws to deal with imposters?"Section 17 of the act states no persons shall practise any healthcare profession without being registered, thus making it a criminal offence to practice without being registered," she said.
