Hawks arrest Welkom woman after R1m cash found in geyser

A 32-year-old woman arrested after being caught with gold-bearing material and more than R1-million in cash is to appear in Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

“More arrests are imminent‚” the Hawks’ in the Free State warned after the joint operation with the Serious Organised Crime Unit and Crime Intelligence.

“Information was received that there was large sum of money as well as gold-bearing material at a house in Diaas Street‚ Dagbreek‚” a Hawks statement said.

“When officers arrived at the house they found a woman and‚ upon executing the search warrant‚ 50kg of gold-bearing material‚ gold processing equipment as well as R1 082 400 in cash were found in the house.

“The cash was hidden inside an old geyser next to the house. A Toyota D4D Fortuner and the cash were subsequently seized.”

The suspect faces charges of acquisition‚ possession‚ disposal of unwrought precious metal.
