Local girl Lisa Good takes on New York
Lisa Good hoisted the South African flag high and proudly at the Coast 2 Coast Live showcase (dubbed the "largest artist showcase in the world") and scooped a Top 3 spot at the New York event on Saturday.
This comes after the pop/electronica singer from Lamontville, Durban - whose real name is Sandisiwe Lisa Sontonga - impressed the American adjudicators with her earworm of a song and video accompaniment of Happy World (Haybo).
The perky track is currently playlisted in the UK, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Namibia, and is still to be picked up by major radio stations in Mzansi.
With the main goal of breaking internationally, her record label, Xhentsa Entertainment, decided to test the international waters after seeing the response from a number of platforms. "We were surprised when the results came back positive and she had been selected in the artist and video showcase for this year in New York."
The result - a deserved third spot at the event for her efforts.
Already on the way back home to share the news with her people, the performer who started singing at only six, told Sowetan it was an opportunity "I couldn't miss".
"I just took the chance of entering my song for Coast 2 Coast because I know how big they are in the US and they help boost artists' careers to a higher level.
"Honestly, I didn't think I'd get chosen because they are more into hip-hop than the music I make. So imagine my surprise when I got a call from them telling me I'm selected and they are loving my music," she said.
Apart from the online entries, Coast 2 Coast Live travels to over 10 US cities every month looking for the best new artists. They receive scores and written feedback from the guest judges such as Music Mystro and Coptic on ways to improve their songs and performances.
