Morgan Gould contemplates move to India
Morgan Gould may look to emulate Sameehg Doutie and set his sights on India as the potential next step in his career‚ where the defender could earn a decent “retirement package” winding down his career.
Gould was among four players who did not have his contract renewed at Kaizer Chiefs nine days ago‚ in a 20-player clearout at Amakhosi. The 33-year-old former Bafana Bafana centre-back may set his sights on a lucrative contract in Asia‚ and perhaps India’s cash-strapped new Super League‚ said his agent Glyn Binkin. Former SuperSport United wing Doutie has reportedly earned well at Atletico Kolkata.
Gould was a central figure in Chiefs’ 2012-13 PSL title-winning team‚ but notched just 21 league appearances in his last two injury-plagued seasons.
“He enjoyed his time at Chiefs while towards the end it didn’t work out for him as well as he’d hoped. He’d never had long-term injuries‚ and then at Chiefs he had two pretty bad injuries‚” Binkin said.
“But credit to him. Many people would have given up when they had the second injury. But Morgan came back strong and at the end of the season played in all of Chiefs’ last three matches.
“Now we’re looking at a number of options locally and maybe abroad too. There are options in Asia‚ and obviously in India‚ which is a possibility.”
The Indian Super League has attracted big-name veterans such as Nicolas Anelka‚ Helder Postiga‚ Florent Malouda‚ Adrian Mutu and Brazil’s Roberto Carlos‚ Elano and Lucio. The average salary for a foreigner is R1.2 million annually.
Binkin said in South Africa there have been‚ “murmurings of interest but nothing concrete yet”. Reports have linked Gould to Bidvest Wits.
“It’s the silly season and at this early stage of the off-season there is still a lot of uncertainty from clubs in who they will target‚” Binkin said.
“The sale of clubs has created uncertainty too. Closer to when teams start their pre-seasons there will be more activity.”
Mpumalanga Black Aces has been sold by the Morfou brothers‚ George and Mario‚ to former Ajax Cape Town boss John Comitis.
Aces‚ who will be renamed and relocated to the Cape‚ have retained coach Muhsin Ertugral and 15 players from the squad that finished fourth in the PSL in the past season‚ and will be in the market for players.
“To be realistic John has spent a lot of money buying the club‚ and may not be able to afford the type of signings he might want. But he’s always been a shrewd operator‚ and so has Muhsin‚” Binkin said of the opportunity presented by Aces’ sale.
Gould has 27 caps for Bafana. He missed out on the 2010 World Cup squad due to injury.
He spent four seasons at Chiefs‚ and before that won three league titles at SuperSport United from 2008 to 2010.
