PSL big clubs on high alert after Vilakazi confirms he wants out of Wits
Sibusiso Vilakazi does want to move from Bidvest Wits‚ and a number of clubs are being entertained‚ but reports of him agreeing terms are just speculation and ignore the mechanics of how transfers work‚ says the player’s agent Mike Makaab.
Makaab on Wednesday confirmed the open secret that Vilakazi is looking for a move from Wits after a season where he spent periods benched and injured but finished the season strongly. It seems highly unlikely a playmaker of 2013-14 PSL Player of the Season Vilakazi’s stature will go anywhere from second-placed Wits other than to one of the big three clubs‚ with Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs apparently the most interested in signing the Bafana Bafana star.
Makaab‚ though‚ dismissed reports and rumours swirling on Wednesday that Vilakazi has agreed terms with Sundowns‚ with just a transfer fee between the clubs remaining to be finalised.
“A player cannot agree terms without the clubs having first agreed that the player will be sold‚” Makaab said.
“Yes‚ of course there are a number of clubs who have expressed an interest in Vilakazi. And we have even been in talks with a number of them.
“But we have done that all with the permission of Bidvest Wits. We cannot act without their permission.”
Makaab said Vilakazi‚ whose contract runs until June 2018‚ does want a move from Wits in the current off-season.
“Vilakazi always committed himself wholeheartedly to the past season at Wits. And now that that has been completed he wants to find another club‚” the agent said.
“I think it’s an open secret that Vilakazi wants to move on.”
Chiefs have reportedly had several offers to procure Vilakazi turned down by Wits.
There had been interest‚ after Vilakazi’s award-winning campaign in 2014-15 where he also won Player’s Player of the Season‚ from clubs in Denmark‚ especially Brondby where the player had a trial in 2014.
However the economic climate in Europe‚ and Vilakazi’s lesser form for Wits in the past two seasons‚ have seen the player’s foreign prospects cool.
Makaab said it might be better for Vilakazi’s interests at this stage in his career to move to a big team in South Africa rather than a club in a minor league in Europe at this stage of his career.
Players such as Keagan Dolly and Khama Billiat have found great success in their careers since their moves from Ajax Cape Town to Sundowns‚ winning a league and cup double in the past season and both being nominated for the past campaign’s PSL Player of the Season award.
