Fifa hands Bafana lowly seeding in 2018 Soccer World Cup draw
South Africa have been handed a lowly seeding for the 2018 World Cup draw later this month after they were put in the third tier of pots for the groups to determine the final phase of qualification for the global showpiece.
Bafana Bafana will avoid a repeat meeting with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon‚ who they drew with home and away in March in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying‚ and will also not play against powerful Morocco‚ Congo or Guinea‚ who are also in the same pot.FIFA have decided on the seedings based on past results and ranking points up to‚ and including last week’s Nations Cup qualifiers‚ where Shakes Mashaba’s charges partially redeemed themselves after a 4-0 away thumping of the Gambia
The draw will be made at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football on June 24 and see five groups made up of four teams.
The qualifiers will start in October and be completed in late 2017 with only the group winners advancing to the Russia-held event.
The pots will be made up of:
Pot 1: Algeria‚ Ghana‚ Ivory Coast‚ Senegal‚ Tunisia
Pot 2: Cape Verde Islands‚ Democratic Republic of Congo‚ Egypt‚ Mali‚ Nigeria
Pot 3: Cameroon‚ Congo‚ Guinea‚ Morocco‚ South Africa
Pot 4: Burkina Faso‚ Gabon‚ Libya‚ Uganda‚ Zambia
A dream draw for South Africa would be to be paired with Tunisia‚ the Cape Verde and Libya in their group. The worst case scenario would be African champions Ivory Coast‚ Nigeria and Zambia in the same group.
